Frequently Asked Questions
Planning a renovation often raises plenty of questions. Here are answers to some of the questions I'm asked most often.
Why Hire an Interior Designer?
An interior designer helps you make better decisions before money is spent. Good planning improves layouts, storage, lighting and the selection of materials and finishes, while helping to avoid costly mistakes. The goal isn't simply to create a beautiful home—it's to create one that functions beautifully every day.
If you're planning a renovation, I'd love to discuss your ideas before work begins.
When Should I Hire an Interior Designer?
The ideal time is at the very beginning of your project. Starting early gives you more design options, clearer budgets and better coordination with builders and suppliers. It also helps avoid changes later, saving both time and money.
The earlier we begin planning, the better the outcome is likely to be.
Is Hiring an Interior Designer Worth the Cost?
Professional design is an investment in making better decisions. Careful planning can help avoid expensive changes during construction and ensures your budget is invested where it will have the greatest impact. Good design creates value that lasts long after the renovation is complete.
Good design often saves more than it costs.
Can You Work Within My Budget?
Absolutely. Every project has a budget, and my role is to help you achieve the best possible result within it. By prioritising the elements that matter most, we can create a home that is both beautiful and practical without unnecessary expense.
A realistic budget can still achieve an outstanding result.
Will an Interior Designer Add Value to My Home?
Thoughtful planning, functional layouts and quality detailing can improve both the enjoyment of your home and its long-term appeal. While no one can guarantee resale value, well-designed homes are always more enjoyable to live in and are often more attractive to future buyers.
The best renovations improve daily life first.
What Does an Interior Designer Actually Do?
An interior designer brings together all the elements of your renovation into one cohesive plan. This may include space planning, kitchens, bathrooms, lighting, colour, custom joinery, material selection and coordinating decisions throughout the project.
Good design creates a more cohesive home and a smoother renovation.
Can I Use My Own Builder?
Yes. Many of my clients already have a preferred builder. Builders and interior designers have different skills that complement one another, and clear drawings and specifications help ensure the finished result matches the design.
Working together usually produces the best outcome.
Do I Need Plans Before Renovating?
Yes. Decisions made during the planning stage are far less expensive than changes made once construction has begun. Detailed plans provide clarity, reduce uncertainty and help everyone involved work towards the same vision.
Planning is one of the best investments you can make in your renovation.
How Do I Choose the Right Interior Designer?
Look for experience, a portfolio of completed projects and a design approach that suits your lifestyle rather than passing trends. Just as importantly, choose someone you feel comfortable working with, as good communication is essential to a successful project.
Choose someone you trust as well as admire.
What Happens at the First Consultation?
Our first meeting is an opportunity to discuss your home, your ideas, your budget and what you'd like to achieve. I'll listen carefully, answer your questions and help you understand the options available, so you can move forward with confidence.
A good consultation provides clarity, confidence and a clear direction for your project.
Which areas do you work in?
I'm based in Wellington and work throughout the wider Wellington region, including Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Porirua, the Kapiti Coast and the Wairarapa. Depending on the project, I'm also happy to discuss work elsewhere in New Zealand.
If you're unsure whether I work in your area, please get in touch.
